Residents panic as Nanyuki River stinks
Nanyuki river serves as one of the main tributaries to the famous Ewaso Nyiro North River which drains to Lorian Swamp.
The river flows from Mt. Kenya through the forested area, residential area and to the town.
The locals utilize the water for both commercial and domestic use.
It's estimated that over 3.6 million people relies on Ewaso Nyiro, including livestock plus wildlife downstream.
The toxic sewer effluents, plastic waste and chemicals that are now being dumped into a section of the Nanyuki river have caused panic amongst the locals.
The immediate neighbourhood is under threat of disease outbreak such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A and polio.
The urban water should be treated before draining into rivers in order to safeguard the aquatic life.
There is need for an immediate intervention on this polluted river.
Environmental activists have launched an online campaign to call upon those responsible to act swiftly and clean up the mess.
This is a tickling time bomb. Prevention is better than cure.
